BUILD YOUR OWN IDENTITY AS A PHOTOGRAPHER

As a photographer, it can be difficult to stand out in a crowded market. With the rise of social media, anyone can take a good photo and share it with the world. So how do you set yourself apart from the rest? The answer lies in building your own photography identity. In this article, I will dive deep into what a photography identity is, why it's important, and how to build your own. I'll also share some tips for marketing your photography identity and some podcast recommendations for further learning.

What is a photography identity?

Your photography identity is essentially your unique style and vision as a photographer. It's the way you see the world and the way you capture it through your lens. It's the colors you use, the subjects you choose, and the emotions you convey. It's what sets you apart from other photographers and makes your work recognizable.

Why is a photography identity important?

Having your own photography identity is important for several reasons. First and foremost, it allows you to stand out in a crowded market. In 2023 virtually everyone is a Photographer. Phone cameras. Camera cameras. With so many photographers out there, it can be difficult to get noticed. When I was a photographer first time around, back in the pre-internet days, it was definitely easier to get noticed. (I won’t dwell on how old that makes me sound)All that to say - if you have a unique style and vision, and persevere, people are more likely to remember you and seek out your work.

Another benefit of having your own photography identity is that it can help you attract the right clients. If you have a specific style or niche, you'll attract clients who are looking for that particular look or feel. This can lead to more fulfilling work and better relationships with your clients.

Finally, having your own photography identity can bring you a sense of fulfillment and purpose. When you have a clear vision for your work, you'll be more motivated to create and will feel a sense of pride in your accomplishments.

Steps to building your own photography identity

Building your own photography identity takes time and effort, but it's worth it in the end. Here are some steps to get you started:

Defining your style and vision

The first step in building your own photography identity is to define your style and vision. This can take some time and experimentation, but it's important to have a clear idea of what you want your work to look like. Start by looking at other photographers whose work you admire and try to identify what it is about their work that speaks to you. Is it the colors they use? The composition? The subject matter? Use this as a starting point for defining your own style.

How to stand out in a crowded market

Once you have a clear idea of your style and vision, the next step is to figure out how to stand out in a crowded market. One way to do this is to specialize in a particular niche or subject matter. For example, you could become known for your portraits of pets, or your landscape photos of the desert. Another way to stand out is to develop a signature style that is instantly recognizable. This could be a particular editing style, or the way you use light and shadow in your images. In short DO More and do it differently than those around you.

The role of personal projects in developing your identity

Personal projects are a great way to develop your photography identity. When you're working on a personal project, you have the freedom to experiment and try new things without the pressure of pleasing a client. This can lead to breakthroughs in your work and help you define your style and vision even further.

The importance of consistency in your work

Consistency is key when it comes to building your photography identity. You want your work to be recognizable and cohesive, so it's important to maintain a consistent style and vision across all of your images. This doesn't mean that every photo needs to look exactly the same, but there should be a common thread that ties them all together.

Tips for marketing your photography identity

Once you've developed your photography identity, it's important to market it effectively. Here are some tips to help you do that. If you have read my other blogs you will know I’m not a fan of social media but I’ve included it here because in some cases it is valid.

  • Build a website that showcases your work and your unique style.

  • Develop a strong brand that reflects your photography identity.

Building your own photography identity takes time and effort, but it's worth it in the end. By defining your style and vision, standing out in a crowded market, and marketing yourself effectively, you can create a successful photography business that reflects your unique perspective. Remember to stay true to yourself and your vision, and don't be afraid to experiment and try new things. With persistence and dedication, you can unleash your creative potential and build a photography business that you're proud of.

Until next time.
