The Details
Sample Itinerary
Here’s a sample itinerary for a full day workshop, to give you an idea of the number and types of locations we’ll visit. Expect this to change a little, so we can take advantage of the weather and tidal conditions on the day. Don’t worry if you think you might run out of energy by the afternoon; we can substitute the last location for a café!
09:30 - Meet and greet.
10:00 - Location 1. We’ll run through some theory before setting up our cameras and tripods for the first time and delving into capturing our images. I will be on hand throughout to guide you and offer support.
11:00 - Location 2. Here we will focus on composition and practise capturing some details within the landscape.
12:30 - We’ll stop for a relaxing lunch at a local cafe/restaurant(cake included!).
15:00 - Location 3. This will be our final location and likely sunset destination. We will focus on light and shadow with the setting sun.
18:30 - Drop off. Group Evening meal is also an option.
Frequently asked Questions
Dont worry if you’re not 100% confident with your camera settings—I’ve got you. By lunchtime, you’ll have them locked down.
At our first location, we’ll break it all down: ISO, aperture, shutter speed, white balance, metering, focusing - the works. I’ll gauge where you’re at and build from there. Even if you’re shooting in full auto right now, by the end of the day, you’ll be comfortable experimenting with manual mode and taking full creative control.
But let’s be real - great landscape photography isn’t just about settings. I’ll guide you through composition techniques that add depth and storytelling to your shots. If the light’s not playing nice? No problem. We’ll shift focus and explore the finer details in the landscape—textures, patterns, and moments most people overlook.
And to make sure everything sticks, I’ll send you my landscape photography eBook after the workshop, packed with key takeaways so you can keep refining your craft at your own pace.
What can I expect to learn?
Let’s Make Sure the Workshop Suits You
To get the most out of your experience, please be honest about your fitness level when booking - this helps me plan the workshop to match your needs.
Most of our walking will be on good paths and rough terrain, with no major climbs. That said, some short, steep sections may require a reasonable level of fitness. A walking pole can be useful for extra stability on uneven ground.
My workshops are laid-back but immersive - we’ll typically spend up to six hours outdoors on a full-day workshop (around three and a half hours for a half-day). Of course, if you start feeling low on energy, we can always adjust the plan - wrap up early, grab a coffee, and review your images instead. It’s all about making the experience enjoyable and rewarding!
How fit do I need to be?
I know your workshop is an investment, and the last thing we want is to be battling heavy rain, high winds, or thick fog the entire time. While changeable weather can create dramatic, unforgettable shots, it can also make learning a challenge - especially if we’re constantly running for cover!
Ideally, we want stable conditions so we can focus on photography without interruptions. When booking, let me know your overall availability - if you’re local, we may have some flexibility to reschedule around the weather.
If you’re touring the North Coast 500 and have only one available date, we’ll make the most of it - rain or shine. Just be sure to come prepared with warm, waterproof clothing and the right gear protection to keep your camera safe from the elements!
What if the weather's poor?
While insurance isn’t required, I highly recommend it - especially for multi-day landscape photography workshops. It’s a good idea to be covered for medical emergencies, personal accidents, trip cancellations, and baggage loss.
Our workshops often take us into remote areas where facilities are limited. By booking, you acknowledge the risks involved in exploring rugged terrain and agree to follow the guidance of SomewhereSky Photography at all times.
I’ll always prioritise your safety and well-being, but I can’t be held responsible for injuries, illness, or any incidents resulting from lack of fitness, carelessness, or negligence. Your personal belongings - including camera gear - remain your responsibility throughout the workshop.
Let’s be smart, stay safe, and focus on capturing some epic shots!
Do I need insurance, and what are the terms and conditions of booking?
Camera: Shoot with whatever you have! Whether it’s a compact, DSLR, mirrorless, or even your phone, a great shot is about skill, not just gear. If possible, get familiar with your camera’s menu before the workshop, and bring the manual if you have it.
Camera Bag: A rucksack-style bag is best for comfort while hiking. Make sure it’s weatherproof or has a rain cover to protect your gear.
Tripod: If you’re serious about landscape photography, a sturdy yet lightweight tripod is a game-changer. Carbon fiber tripods are great if your budget allows. Also, bring an Allen key to tighten any loose parts and don’t forget your quick release plate!
Lenses: I typically shoot with two zoom lenses (on a full-frame sensor):
24-70mm – Great all-rounder for landscapes.
70-200mm – Perfect for compressing distant scenes.
Avoid ultra-wide lenses—they can make the foreground lose impact.
Filters: Filters help capture what the human eye sees. My go-to filters:
UV filters (for lens protection)
Polariser (for cutting glare and boosting colors)
Neutral density filters (graduated & uniform) for controlling light.
Remote/Cable Release: A small but essential tool to avoid camera shake—even when using a tripod.
Spirit Level: A hot shoe spirit level keeps your horizon straight, saving you from cropping in post.
Memory & Backup: Bring plenty of memory cards, especially if you’re shooting RAW (which I will encourage!). For multi-day workshops, bring a laptop for backups and editing sessions.
Spare Batteries & Charger: Camera batteries drain fast, especially in cold weather or when using mirrorless cameras. Bring all your spares—if you pack a charger, we might be able to top them up at lunch.
Lens Cloth & Towel: Essential for wiping off rain or mist. A small towel helps dry off your camera in wet conditions.
Diffuser/Reflector: A collapsible diffuser is handy for softening harsh shadows in bright conditions.
Gear Guide – What to Bring
Pack Smart, Stay Comfortable!
I drive a Hyundair Tucson 5 seater SUV, which has a decent amount of boot space—but trust me, with camera gear and multiple participants, it fills up fast! Pack as light as possible while still ensuring you stay warm, dry, and comfortable in changing weather conditions.
Remember, we’ll be standing around for long periods at each location, so layering up is key.
Here’s a solid packing checklist to keep you prepared:
Footwear: Sturdy walking boots and/or wellies
Extras: Gaiters & spare socks (wet feet = bad day)
Walking pole (optional, but helpful on rough terrain)
Waterproof layers: Jacket & trousers to battle the elements
Warm layers: A fleece and gloves (yes, even in summer!)
Hand warmers – because cold fingers don’t work well with cameras!
Hat: For sun protection and warmth
Midge head net – Highlands essential!
Sunscreen & sunglasses – because yes, Scotland does get sun!
Water bottle (2L recommended) & small flask of tea or coffee
Pro tip: Being comfortable = more focus on your shots. Pack smart, and let’s capture some magic!

"I’ve been on several photography workshops, but this one with Steve from SomewhereSky stood out, as much for the excellent tuition and fun we had as the snippets of scottish history he threw in from time time.
He let us explore each location but was always on hand with personalised guidance, when needed and this ensured every shoot location was both educational and inspiring.
I appreciated how patient and approachable Steve was - always willing to answer questions and provide constructive feedback. Thanks to his guidance, I came away with some of my best shots ever and a newfound confidence in my photography. I can’t wait to join another workshop!"
"This workshop was an unforgettable experience! Steve created a perfect balance of adventure, exploration, fun and skill-building. Although I am not a beginner I found Steve’s location specific explanations of composition, lighting and his genuine enthusiasm made the entire experience so enjoyable.
Of course it helped that the locations chosen were absolutely stunning, and the weather was in our favour! The group atmosphere was also supportive and fun. I left not only with incredible photos but also with new friends and cherished memories. If you love photography and the outdoors, don’t miss this opportunity!"
